2. Initial Ideas and Statement of Intention

Initial Ideas.

NIGHT

When I first looked at the stimuli I immediately narrowed down my choices to either; Night, Play or Postal. I knew I wanted to explore Human Trafficking within photography and Night as a stimulus seemed to be a great opportunity to do so. I decided to do a shoot in both the White and Black studio experimenting with taking photos of myself and photos of my friend. I wanted to show two sides to the idea of Human Trafficking and Prostitution. I took photos of myself showing what people think of when they think of the word 'Prostitution' and then what people think of when they hear the words 'Human Trafficking' and then I wanted to show the overlap of the two. I wanted to show how beaten and bruised the women who get trafficked are and also represent how the women are feeling on the inside. I also did some experimental shots with long exposure including a lighter and movement. I wanted to explore the stereotypical perception of Human Trafficking and Prostitution and the attitude people tend to have towards them. People stereotypically think and would blame people for finding themselves in the situation where they are a victim of Human Trafficking as it's their fault as they seem to think.

Statement of Intention

In this project I am going to explore the different aspects of Night through experimentation in the studios and also out and about at night time exploring Urban Street Photography. I am going to look at this project based upon Night from a Human Trafficking perspective. I am going to look at additional photographers and carry out responses for them all keeping night in mind. I want to look at the stereotypical judgements of victims of human trafficking in relation to their realities. I hope to present my final photographs in a striking way that represents entrapment. I would ideally like to change my audience's perception on Human Trafficking and educate them on the seriousness of it as it is a subject very rarely touched upon and very rarely cared about. I would like my final photographs to all be very different in order to highlight that Human Trafficking can happen to anyone. I would like there to be candid photos taken on DSLR, manipulated photos taken on DSLR, Double exposure portraiture, film photography, Liquid Light, digital negatives, long exposure, fast shutter, disposable camera, polaroid photos, black and white shots, colour shots, etc... I would like to experiment with all photography techniques in order to produce at least 27 final photographs each photograph representing 1 million Victims as in the world today there are 27 Million Victims of Human Trafficking.

My photographs will explore Urban Street photography as I think that even in photographs where people are not present the essence of Human Trafficking can still be indicated. I want to look at the vibrance and yet vulnerability of the atmosphere in night time streets as then they will show a side to human trafficking of abandonness and solitude. I will research photographers like Rut Blees Luxemburg and Ahn Jun and Dan Mountford and Jacob D'Roziro and take elements of all of their work and apply it to my own. I am hoping to research into the different ways I can present my work at an earlier stage so that I can keep on top of the exam process being aware of the time sot I have.

I have been heavily inspired by Matt Redman and LZ7's song 27 Million and so I am considering incorporating lyrics into my final piece in order to educate my audience upon the extremity of human trafficking in the 21st Century. I think the very beginning of the song is very striking: "It astounds me that not only does human trafficking exist on the earth today, but there are actually more slaves than there have ever been before in the history of humanity. Its almost incomprehensible."

As my idea has developed I have decided that I no longer wish to do my previous idea but rather print out 10 final images. The first 5 depicting night time and human trafficking and the second 5 depicting day time and freedom. I want to do this for several reasons. Firstly because wether it be day or night - human trafficking is still a reality. Secondly because I want to show that human trafficking can happen to anyone. Thirdly because The main thing I want to show through my final photographs is that although "There may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning." I want to show this because Human trafficking is something so very rarely touched upon and I want to see an end to human trafficking come about and this can only happen by first making people aware of its existence and secondly getting support from people. The A21 Campaign founded by Christine Cane has saved many people but still not enough. I don't want human trafficking to be viewed as a problem that can't be solved but rather a problem we have the ability to solve. Those of us who aren't victims can bring about that joy in the morning for victims just by simply donating money or even spreading awareness.
