6. Ahn Jun - Inspiration

Ahn Jun did a photography project based on being on the edge of death and suicide. I thought that she would be interesting to explore if I am going down the route of human trafficking and the depression these people go through. I thought it would be interesting to respond to her photographs but in the dark.

I really like this photograph as it sets the content sets the tone and the mood clearly. The woman is sat with her feet hanging through the bars of the stairs on a high floor. This shows fearlessness and danger and yet a trust in her own mind. She could be finding peace and solitude in this state of mind. This is interesting as when you look at her other work her photographs all follow the same theme of being on the edge. I like the lack of colour and the exploration of shades and I think the angle from which the photograph was taken was perfect in creating a leading line that goes on and on in an almost never ending spiral. This could represent the entrapment she has in her mind due to her spiralling thoughts. The juxtaposition between the feelings of calm and tranquility and the reality of the image is something I would like to explore within my photography.

I think this photograph is powerful in showing danger and fearlessness and the angle from which the photograph was taken captures the city and a reflection in the window which almost creates a sense of comfort. The cityscape brings this photo to life and sets the atmosphere proving the realism of the photograph. In this photograph I feel a Virtual embodiment mentally being able to place myself in her position at this great height. This photograph challenges the social norms. This photograph almost enforces a stereotypical attitude towards this kind of behaviour but in reality her actions are currently positioning her in as much danger as every other human faces in their day to day life. Just because she is standing at such a height doesn't mean that she is suicidal or in danger, but could quite simply just suggest that she is at peace in this position.

I also think that this photograph is really interesting with its leading lines and cityscape. The lack of colour and yet the block orange is really odd and fascinating as it is unexpected. However the block colour is the most prominent part f the photograph as it is the first thing that captures the viewers attention and then the eye will follow that leading line up to the model whom we see being fearless and dangerous. Without the block colour she would be lost amongst the city and would blur into this urban landscape. This photo could suggest that her being outside in a high built up area is her being at peace when she is closest to nature. Seeing that she is in a very built up area there are no fields or parks anywhere and so the closest to nature she can get is when she is closet to the sky which is where she is in this photograph.

I think that Ahn Jun's photography is quite deep and meaningful and consequently captured my eye however having looked more deeply into her photos I feel that they are out of place in my project and therefore haven't expanded on my research and development and responses.
