8. Development

Over the holidays I have been thinking a lot about my project and in order for me to capture human trafficking and its really disturbing effects it has on people, I wished to explore the contrast between the day and night through taking photographs in the day time and for them to look beautiful and full of freedom and then for that to contrast the entrapment of the nighttime. I would like to do this so that I can show that people who are victims of human trafficking can only dream of the freedom that is captured in the day time photography. I would also like to link my photography to the lyric "There may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning" from Jesus Culture's Your Love Never Fails song.

When taking this photograph I set my camera on a high iso in order to capture a more focused photograph, I had my aperture set low and had my camera on the bulb setting on a tripod. I held the shutter open for around 40 seconds and the lower aperture ensured that my photo didn't get drowned out by the light coming from the street lights behind. The stars illuminate the image and the silhouette I think is very powerful. When taking this photograph I thought about Human Trafficking and how a victim may feel. I thought about them being completely surrounded by people but feeling alone and cut off from the rest of the world.

For this photograph I set my camera on the multiple exposure setting and selected two exposures. I then  with 100iso and the aperture of 9 and the shutter speed of 125/1 I took a photograph of my models hands up against the sun in order to capture a silhouette, I then immediately turned round to the blossom tree behind me and took a photo of that and my camera automatically flattened the images together. I haven't yet photoshopped this photograph but on my laptops settings I just increased the brightness and contrast and this faded out any faint hints of the images outside of the hands.

For this photograph I had my camera on a tripod and set on the bulb setting I pointed my camera up to the sky and held the shutter open for roughly a minute. I had the camera set on manual focus and just estimated what it was I was focusing on as it was pitch black. Looking back at this photograph I can see the stars aren't in focus but the sky scape fascinates me.

For this photograph I had my camera on a tripod and set on the bulb setting. I held the shutter down for just over a minute attempting to manually focus on the pebbles. I found that this photograph shocked me when I finally released the shutter as I wasn't expecting the photograph to appear to have been taken in the daytime seeing as I took the image when it was pitch black at 10pm at night.

For this photograph which I need to edit on photoshop I felt surprising when I saw the outcome as human trafficking is what I am focussing on I thought it quite beautiful that the silhouette is out of focus as it reminded me that in our society based of statistics its clear to see that victims of human trafficking are very out of focus and that people can encounter victims of human trafficking every day and just be completely unaware of it because they aren't focusing on them and instead are focusing on the world around them.

For this photograph I had my camera on a tripod and then held the shutter open for around 40 seconds and managed to capture a shooting star in the night sky over the sea. I like the soft effect that the shutter speed has had on the sea.

For this photograph I set my camera on the double exposure setting in my camera. I photographed my model on a long shutter speed creating the silhouette of her face. I then with my camera on the tripod positioned the camera facing out to the sea and held down the shutter on a speed of 60 seconds. My camera then automatically stitched the two photographs together creating the sea inside her face. I then increased the contrast and brightness of my photograph in order to remove any excess imagery.

For this photograph I similarly had my photograph on a tripod and then held my shutter open for the length of around 60 seconds. This allowed enough light to enter the camera in order to highlight the night sky and the stars and create a very mystical and magical effect. This I feel is important within my project as it shows that beauty is still present and achievable even in the very darkest of times.

For this photograph I set my camera onto the multiple exposure setting and positioned my model so that she was standing in front of the sun. This created a silhouette effect. I then immediately turned to the blossom tree behind me and then photographed that allowing the sky to seep through. I wanted the sky to feature in this photograph as when I edited this photograph on photoshop I wanted to be able to remove the blue sky so that the blossom just sprung out only creating half of the silhouette and half of the complete blossom.

In Aldeburgh where I went on holiday over easter, there is a giant scallop in the middle of the pebbled beach. The words inscribed in the scallop state: "I hear those voices that will not be drowned" I thought this was perfect in relation to my project as human trafficking is an issue where in the victims voices aren't always heard as only 1% of victims are ever rescued. This reminded me of the A21 campaign and of Christianity when it comes to human trafficking as the A21 campaign do hear the voices that will not be drowned out as those who are victims of human trafficking are of great importance to them and it is their aim to save them. I thought it only fitting that I photographed the scallop and seeing as it was so dark and I couldn't achieve a good photograph with a long shutter I decided I would use an iPhone torch light. I got my dad to walk slowly in front of the scallop shining his torch light all over the scallop while I held down the shutter. I am pleased with the outcome of this photograph as I think it illuminates metaphorically the work the A21 campaign are doing in todays society to help rescue victims of human trafficking.

For this photograph like my other double exposures I used the same process of setting my camera onto a multiple exposure then positioning my model in front of the sun and then turning round and photographing the blossom tree behind.

As I previously in my 100 photos captured movements of light in the dark room I thought seeing as I was on the beach and it was pitch black I would have another go with an iPhone torch light. I had my camera on the tripod and held the shutter open whilst my dad drew a treble clef in the night sky.

I think that this photograph of mine is powerful as for my project I want to explore the journey of the entrapment in the night around human trafficking in present day to freedom in the daytime in the future. I think that this photography captures nature and freedom beautifully. For this photograph I set my camera onto the multiple exposure setting and then positioned my model in front of the sun creating the silhouette effect I then turned to the beautiful draping tree next to the canal bank and photographed the leaves dangling down.
